How you can pray for the people and the Church of Japan Continue reading

The courteous, hospitable and hard-working Japanese people are often too busy and hurried to give heed to the gospel and have no concept of personal sin or their need for salvation. Pray that God would use the recent economic shocks, political instability and fears for the future to shake many out of complacency. There are however some who are open to attending English or other foreign language classes run by churches, or even come to evangelistic meetings. Some are then very open to start an individual Bible study with the missionary, pastor or Christian. For most however, Christians remain objects of suspicion. The Japanese people want to continue to worship their ancestors at the Buddhist or Shinto family altars and perform the prescribed religious rituals on holidays so as not to break with deeply embedded cultural tradition. Pray that these barriers will come down and people would repent and believe.

There are many strong pressures placed on Christians in this society which turn many away from church and Christian fellowship. These include pressure from unbelieving spouses (husbands in most cases) not to attend church, by unbelieving family members to worship at the family altar, by fellow business workers to socialize after work. Pray that Christians who have fallen out of fellowship will be restored.

New religions and Buddhist and Shinto sects have grown far faster than Christianity. Pray that those involved would be set free.

Japanese Christians have made little impact on the centers of power [industrial, commercial and political] in the land.

Bible training for Christian workers is provided by nearly 100 seminaries and Bible schools. Pray that the Church Japan would be led by Godly Japanese men committed to the preaching of Christ and Him crucified. Sadly Christian workers in training are at an all-time low and many post-war pastors are retiring with no one to replace them.

The church needs prayer:

Christians are a tiny minority in a society where consensus and conformity are extremely important. Few families come to faith. Most believers are the only Christians in their family. Individual believers feel exposed. We need to see whole families believing and establishing family worship.

There is a great lack of men in the churches. The drive for success and demands of employers make it very hard for men to break free.

About 70% of all churches have an average attendance of less than 30. This often means that there are not enough people to do the various duties at church so at times pastors are forced to complete these tasks rather than devoting themselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word (Acts 6:1-7).

There are more than 1,700 towns and cities without churches or any Christian witness. Most of the rural areas of the country are scarcely touched by the Gospel of peace. Please labor with us in prayer for a movement of the life producing Spirit in a land which has yet to see the light of Christ.

Student witness is strategic, but only a quarter of campuses have any Christian presence. The estimated number of all Christian students is 0.1 percent.

Pray for the growth of the Church in Japan, which has been in sharp decline since the 1960s

Hello! We are Tim, Chie, and Mitsuki Burns. We are missionary appointees on our way to Japan, where God has called us to proclaim the Gospel and plant churches to the glory of His name.

There is great need for the Gospel of Hope in Japan. Less than 1% of the Japanese people are Christians. The Joshua Project lists the Japanese as the second largest unreached people group in the world. There are over 1,700 cities towns and villages in Japan that do not have a single Christian church.

However I firmly believe that the Jesus’ charge to His disciples in Luke 10:1-2 demonstrates that God is at work in even those parts of the world where the light of Christ has not yet shone.

“After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.””

We are going to Japan with the knowledge that it is God who does the work of salvation, we are simply laborers in His field. Our prayer and hope is that God would use us as instruments in His hands as He grows His Church in Japan. We need partners in this work. If you have a desire to see the nations reached with the Gospel of God’s Grace, please join us in this work.
